Music Venues

--Situated in the Sydney’s fashionable Oxford St, Paddington, The Elephant & Wheelbarrow is a British-themed pub with rich, dark timber interiors and an impressive range of imported beers. The pub is part of a chain that sees similar venues in Western Australia, Queensland, Tasmania and Victoria.

Melbourne-based Architectural Audio Visual has provided the audio solution for all of the venues country-wide, with the Paddington pub being the latest project. The brief was to supply and install the background music system in the main public bar, as well as catering to the front-of-house requirement for the live acts that frequently play in the venue. Provision also had to be made for DJs who occasionally feature at the venue.

“The background music system comprises 14 JBL Control 26CT flush mount ceiling speakers which we favour because of their power handling, they can achieve a reasonably high volume level,” said Mike. “They’ve also got punch and clarity. They are a robust and reliable unit as well as being installer friendly. We also have a JBL SoundZone processor and two keypads.”

The front-of-house PA system utilises two JBL AE Series AM6215 15in and horn speakers and a pair of JBL SR4715X 2 x 15in subs powered by four Crown CE2000 amplifiers. Foldback consists of three JBL SF12M stage monitors and a JBL SF25 twin 15in and horn for drum fill both driven by a Crown XS500 amplifier.

From dbx there is a DriveRack 260 for complete equalisation and loudspeaker control, a dbx 1231 Graphic EQ and a dbx 231 31 band Graphic EQ for foldback. The mixing console of choice is a Soundcraft Spirit FX16

“Industry wise, the Soundcraft Spirit console is regarded as a high quality product and the guys that use it are all familiar with the product,” continued Mike. “Operators feel at home with the Soundcraft desk. Reliability is a key factor too particularly in a filthy environment like a pub.”

Mike reports that the owners of the Elephant & Wheelbarrow pub are very happy with their audio installation and the quality of the products.
