The Series FIVE, located in an open sound booth at the back of the fan-shaped room, is called upon to provide both the front-of-house and monitor mixes for services. When the church's praise team is on stage, the Series FIVE typically supplies eight individual monitor mixes via its auxiliaries.
CSD General Manager and Senior Design Consultant Doug Hood, who spearheaded the audio, video and lighting system installation as well as acoustic treatments for the new sanctuary, notes that the Calvary Chapel project came as a referral from High Desert Church in Victorville, California, home to a 40-channel Series FIVE.
"Calvary Chapel saw how pleased High Desert was with the Series FIVE we had installed there and specifically requested a similar setup," he says. "In addition to having a good number of auxes, it's a very quiet analog console that's fairly easy to run, even for some of the lay engineers. The church plans to regularly bring in national Contemporary Christian acts and the Series FIVE is a board that any professional engineer would be happy to mix on."
CCCV Sound Technician Ken Dyer agrees. "We've really made an effort to have our new sanctuary system appeal to touring engineers, and this desk is a big part of that," Dyer adds. "The Series FIVE is such a clean board; the audio signal coming out of it sounds so good. I also love the VCAs, as does most of my volunteer staff."
CSD also installed a 328XD digital mixer and Spirit FX16 in the church's production room. The 328XD is used in an isolation booth for various recording tasks, while the FX16 is employed as a sidecar on yet a fourth Soundcraft - an existing 40-channel Spirit 8. The Spirit 8 formerly served as the FOH/monitor desk in the previous main sanctuary and has now been relegated to handle audio production for Calvary Chapel's video recordings, Internet streaming and overflow seating areas.
